Mazda Repair: 2000 Protege over heats in traffic, coolant system, temperature gauge

Hello
I am finding now with the warmer weather, my Protege tempature gage will go very close to the Hot when I am driving long distance or in traffice.It will flucuate between the middle and close to HOT. IS this a problem? Should I have the coolant system checked out? It has never overheated or gone over the HOT temperature. I just don't understand why it flucuates sometimes. I heard it should always be in the center between COOL and HOT.

Hi Andrea thanks fopr asking.
I would only wory if the temperature gauge goes over the 3/4 mark. some fluctuation is ok, it will change depending on how fast you are going or how hard you are being on the car in the city, on the hiway it should stay fairly steady, like i said if it goes  over or stays around the 3/4 mark then you should have it checked out.
