Mazda Repair: Belts, mazda 626lx, altenator

Question
Hi again, thank you for your response, but on my car there are 2 belts, 1 runs Altenator, and Water Pump, Other runs A/C and P/S. The Altenator/Water pump is the only one that is burning, the A/C one is okay. Now it only Squeels and burns when i start my car, after about 10 seconds, it stops. Seems like only when it is cold. Today i let it do this for about 4 starts, then felt both pullies, water pump was cool, but altenator pully was hot, thus i think the prob might be comin from the altenator. But this is my 2nd Brand New one. If you might know of anything else please respond.

Thank You,
Greg

Question -
I have a 1994 Mazda 626LX, 2.0, and I keep getting a bad squeeling from the belts, then they smoke and burn off. Now i have taken the car to 2 garages and they have replaced the Altenator, Water Pump, Battery, Timing Belt, ect with all bran-new parts. Still the belt is squeeling and smoking and eventually it burns off, leaveing me on the side of the road. No garage really knows why it is doing this, so i was wondering if you might happen to have an idea. I really hope so, because i have spent about $1,200 already because of this problem.

Hi Greg thanks for asking.
This should be an easy problem to find. There is obviously something seiezed. That is the only explenation to a belt burning off. first of all the timimg belt has nothing to do with the accesory drive belts. If you had a problem with a timimg belt the engine would just stop running. Most people over look Air conditioning.. Does it still work?? if so the pupm will only engage sometimes. But if the compressor is seized then as soon as the AC clutch engages to the seized compressor the belt----burns off--- If this isnt it, get someone to remove the belts and spin the pullys by hand, this will sow if anything is seized or bent.. Also get them to try to spin the A/C compressor--Not the pully but the center of it where the shaft goes into the pump. Hope this helps
Good luck

Answer
hey Greg.
This is very ODD. I Do realize there is 2 accesory belts on your vehicle, just the AC compressor is most common. It is normal for the alternator to warm up a far bit. There is a possiblitly of there being to much of a load on the alternator. that would cause it to grap significantly. but maby not enough to burn off a belt. TRy tightening the belt a little more, and have a peak downwards at the belt and see if the pullys are in line with each other. Next time you are going to star it up, open the hood and see if anything is seized while someone starts the engine. While running with it squeeking dump water on the belt making noise and if it goes away the belt needs to be replaced again and make sure it is properly tensioned. It is very possible that the belt is OVER tightened as well.,
Try these and get back to me
Good Luck
