Mazda Repair: Mazda 626 Power Steering Fluid, dexron ii, power steering fluid

Question
I own a 1997 Mazda 626, and it needs power steering fluid.  In the manual, it requires a Dexron II, or ATF M-III power steering fluid.  I have looked all over for both of those, but I can't find them anywhere.  Someone told me that Dexron II isn't made anymore.  I was wondering if you could give me any good substitutes for Dexron II or ATF M-III.  Would a regular power steering fluid work fine in my car? Or would a mazda dealorship have Dexron II or ATF M-III fluid?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Dan thanks for asking.
It is true Dexron 2 isnt made any more. But all transmission fluids are a hydraulic fluid. The different ratings are for the friction materials found in transmissions. So you will not have any problems using a diferent type of fluid in there. But you should stay close with what you already have in there. All u have to do is just bump it up to Dexron 3 Or Mazda M-3 transmission fluid. The Dexron 3 and M-3 just has an extra additive for the friction material for smoother shifting in a transmision and will NOT harm anything in the power steering system. Use that and you should be good to go
Good luck
