Mercedes Benz repair: 2004 500sl battieries, service interval, one in the trunk

Question
QUESTION: Hi

I guess i have two batteries, one for the engine another for the electrical system/computer???  Mercedes was trying to up sell me thousands of dollars on several things I really didn't need when I recently brought the car in for servicing. One of the things was replacing both batteries. Their price was crazy. IS the battery in the trunk that supports the electrical system hard to find and very costly? Any tips on where to get or will COSTCO carry it? Also, anything I should know before replacing it myself?  Thanks!

ANSWER: go to www.benzword.org and fill out a profile, I would suggest autohaus az.com  for parts. I generally dont go to the stealership for the service ,. The techs work on a commission basis if they hit a certain amount of money they get a commission so they continue to try to sell you everything. It is quite amusing considering you go in for a minor repair you end up with a quote of always a minimum of 1000.00 dollars

QUESTION: Hi again, but is there anything I should know?  Someone told me you have to maintain a charge to the system while changing the battery or the computer will have to be reset by the stealership (I like that).  How does that work.  Also do you know what the battery is called or model please?

Answer
get a multimeter and see what the voltage on the batteries are.a normal battery will be from 12-14 volts with a multimeter your best bet is to start there. The battery that runs the gps navigation is the other battery (and all your controls) I would start there, You can get any battery as long as it is the same volts amperage, I would suggest that if you checked your voltage with a multimeter and all things run on normal that replacing the batteries are just a service interval issue that MB uses.every so many miles you have a service light etc.As far as changing the battery if it is low you can disconnect it and put a new one in with no problems (the one in the trunk)
