Mercedes Benz repair: 1999 Mercedes ML320, chasis number, auto help

My wife has been stalling occassionally.  Once it would not start yet the motor was turning.  I believe I need to change the fuel filter.  Where is it?  Also when ordering a new filter they tell me I need a chasis number.  Where can I find it?

Wait Bill before you order anything ok. What exactly is the vehicle doing? Stalling ok. does it restart right away? Is there a check engine light on. The ML has had a fuel filter modication . The new fuel filter is larger. If you have the old style small one you will need to do the Modifications. 3 lines and a tie wrap and possibly the fuel pump . Do you really want to just start replacing things?
