Mercedes Benz repair: 1989 300E, fuel pump relay, vent valve

Question
I have a 89 300E that will not stay running at times.  It will start great for a few days and then you will have to start the car at least half a dozen times before it will stay running.  Or it will sputter when you start driving like the car is not getting gas. If the car does this while running it is always within the first mile.
