Mercedes Benz repair: 1985 500SEL fuel pump, gasket repair, reno nevada

Question
I have a 1985 500SEL with 130,000 miles.  I just had the transmission replaced.  I'm pretty sure the fuel pump has given out.  When I pressed the gas to pass on the highway, the car would sputter.  Then all of a sudden it started to sputter at regular speed, and then all of a sudden just stoped running.  It will no longer start. the engine turns, but does not start.  I was hearing a buzz in the rear of the car before this happend.  My question is, is there anything I need to know before I attempt to change the fuel pump?  I will now attempt to do my own repairs as I have been un happy with one of the shops here in Reno.  What started as a simple $300 gasket repair on my transmission, turned to a "full gasket replacement" on the transmission for $1500, that turned to a "bad governer" for an extra $300, that turned into they had to "replace the transmission" and since I have spent so much all ready, they would do it for just $500 dollars more!  Any way, thanks for letting me vent, and I hope you can give me any advice on changing the fuel pump, THANKS!  I live in Reno, Nevada.

Answer
Danger:
Disconnect the battery.
no smoking and/or sparks..
Ground yourself and the car body...

The trick is to gently pinch off the fuel tank line, and release the pressure in the fuel lines, without getting fuel spray in your face.

I suggest the fuel filter be replaced during this operation.
