Mercedes Benz repair: 1983 300SD Turbo Diesel, diesel fuel, delivery problem

I have trouble starting my car when the front end is higher than the rear end... it takes several attempts to start.  The glow plugs have been replaced and the problem still exists.  Because it doesn't always happen, my mechanic doesn't think I have a problem... Gunk in my tank? A leak somewhere?  Please advise.

You have a fuel delivery problem = leak in fuel system drawing air and/or plugged tank strainer or filter.
