Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): stihl 038 magnum, capillary action, plastic gears

Question
QUESTION: Hi, my chainsaw doesn't oil the bar anymore. I took off bar cleaned it, ran saw without bar and still nothing? I blew air into the port and then took off oil cap and pressure released? is there a check valve in the oil path? I saw your other answer about drilling port 1 size bigger until desired flow comes out. Thanks,

ANSWER: That was not any response I gave.

The 038 has an easily accessable oil pump.  Remove the snap ring
and the screws off of the plastic cover at the sprocket.  Under there
you will see a plastic gear on the sprocket which runs another plastic gear on the oiler, they may be damaged.  If not, remove them.
The gear out of the oil pump can be removed by rotating the gear
while lifting the gear with something flat, I do not remember which direction you rotate, but it will be apparent.  Then removal of the oil pump and cleaning is easy, as well as the oil pickup and filter.

QUESTION: I apologize, it must have been someone else. I got everything apart and plastic gears are fine, one gear just sits on the oil pump? I took out pump, opened it and cleaned it. I noticed some light light damage to the gear and metallic color in residual oil. I put everything back together and started it up and still no oil. How easily is gear in pump supposed to spin? Is there a sure way to tell if pump is bad before rebuilding/replacing it? Does pump draw oil out of tank or is oil fed to the pump by pressure or capillary action? Thanks again,

Answer
Make sure the nylon gear is tight on the shaft.  With the oiler off,
did you clean out the oil pickup and filter?

Rinse the oil tank out with gas mix a few times, shake it around, then fill it up halfway again, and run the saw with the bar and chain off, being careful, of course.  Sometimes that will loosen and break up any clogs.

Let me know,
