Mercedes Benz repair: 1981 240D Mercedes, fuel filter replacement, biobor

Question
I recently just bought a 1981 240D the guy I bought it from had all the fluids $ filters changed. He said that it had been running fine but when it got to  one-half a tank it would stop like it was out of fuel.It will restart run a little ways then stop again. It will idle and not stop but when you drove it it runs then stops. I recently went on a trip in it. Sure enought when the tank got to one-half it started. I fill it up it held 9 gallons so it didn't think the guage was wrong and it was empty. I started the car & pumped up the fuel injecter to get the air out the line just in case it had ran out. The car ran a couple of miles then quit again this went on for about 30 miles then started running fine.I notice that when going up a hill and need more fuel it would quit. When the fuel tank is kept full it seems to run fine. What's up? Thanks for your help.

Answer
You have a leak on the suction side of fuel system, or fuel fungus plugging the filters.
Start with the spin on fuel filter, replace it, and be sure to replace the O ring seal on filter bolt with a NEW one, tighten the bolt hard.
Replace all fuel hose showing cracks or moisture.
