What steps should I take before trying to start a 1976 450 SEL that has sat in field for 10 years?

Answer
Remove from field before working on it.
Clean out rodent and/or insect nests.
Drain fuel tank and flush lines.
Replace battery.
Spray hinges, door check straps, key locks and throttle linkages with WD40.
Check and fill all fluid levels before starting.

Prestart oil prime of a long storage engine can save your bearings and bank account.

When you have it running:
Replace all belts, hoses, thermostat, filters and all four tires + check spare tire.
Go through full function test of every system on car.
