Mercedes Benz repair: Electrical System Not Charging, volt meter, 240d

Question
Would it be safe to assume that my alternator is not charging the battery if: 1982' 240d
I pull the connectors from the back of alternator and put positive lead of my volt meter on one of connector tabs on alt.lead and the Neg lead of Volt meter on Neg. Battery post? (while the car is running) belt is tight, I do not get even 1 volt. In the past alt.problem I would get a warning light on dash, and would replace the voltage regulor. I have replace 2 vr's in 2 years!
Maybe time for alt.? your reply, is appreciated.

Answer
The test you describe has blown the voltage regulator, damage to the alternator is also possible from the way you have tested it.
Replace the alternator and voltage regulator.

Look for corroded or damaged wire between alternator and battery; replace bad sections with NEW wire.
