Question - Pretty tight behind radiator, didn't get a clear view of which bracket loosens belt? Also, would you pull altenator from topside or recommend raising car and pulling from underneath? Silly, but I don't want to attempt this project twice.
      Thank you again,
         John

I see your range of expertise is 1959 to 1985. My vehicle is a 1988 ce300. Can't find a site to help. maybe you can. I need to replace the altenator (only putting out 13.1 amps). Can you guide me to a site where I can get steps of removal. Will order repair manual for this specific vehicle soon but need to do this repair asap.
Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide.
  Sincerely
      John Shoaf
Answer -
It is pretty straight forward. Loosen the belt. Disconnect the battery. Remove the bolts holding the alternator on and your on your way. Reverse the process to put it back on.

Answer
If it is accessible from the bottom then that's the way to go. Don't forget to remove and mark the wires on the alternator. Mercedes is real clever with their fasteners. the tensioner is usually pretty apparent. It could be a ratcheting type bolt or in most cases it is rod and nut tensioner.
