Answer
Hi Sebastian.  The top 2 fuses in the fusebox have no power until you turn the sidelights on.

Fuse #3 is the one you need to check out.  It should come live when you turn the ignition on.  It powers the fuel pump and other circuits including the ignition system and the brake lights.  On the 1976-80 MGB there is an ignition relay that is usually the culprit.  Look for a small canister near the fusebox with 4 wires going into it.  There may be two canisters.  One is the starter relay and the other is the ignition relay.  You will probably need to replace the ignition relay.  It can be recognised by the colour of the wires.  There will be two separate white wires with a BROWN stripe, plus a plain brown power supply and a black earth wire.  Unfortunately, there are two wires which are the same colour and they only work one way round, so if the new relay doesn't work, try swapping them round.
