MG Car Repair: 74 1\2 ignition mystery, mg midget, temp gauge

Question
thanks Howard - and in answer to your offer -I would absolutely appreciate a wiring diagram! As for the brand of ignition I purchased - not sure but casing and wiring switch looked identical to what I had. I will try and isolate the shorting wire per suggestion, Funny but since the problems began I noticed the car running hotter than ever - gauge needle slowly gets to centre after about 30 min, where in past was never more than 1\4. Cooling system, rad is good and new oil cooler too..could electrical be sole cause of increasing engine heat too?

Answer
Hi Paul,

I will be glad to post the diagram but you will need to tell me if this is a MG Midget or a MGB.
Since your temp gauge is also reading wrong it is most important that you test the charge rate with a volt meter. A high charge rate makes gauges read wrong and over heats wires and burns up ignition systems and switches.
