MG Car Repair: MG Midget 1979 Too Much wiggle in the Arm of the High Beam Flasher., high beams, aluminium tube

Question
QUESTION: Is there a way of tightening the play in the arm of the high beam flasher?
The arm got loose all of a sudden.
So when I signal right or left now the high beams flash on or off without me moving the arm forward to flash the high beams.
I have had to disconnect the battery every time I park otherwise the lights stay on.
When the car is parked I can move the arm so there is no contact for the lights to be on but when in motion the vibrations just seem to make the arm move.
Any suggestions? Is this just wear and tear?

Thank you, I look forward to your answer.
Albertine

ANSWER: Hi Albertine.  Sounds like wear and tear to me.

However, the arm is just an aluminium tube with a black plastic coating.  The metal tube has splines machined into it at the inner end, and sometimes these can get loose allowing the arm to get floppy or even pull out of its hole.  You may be able to force the arm back into its hole by pressing quite hard on the end of the arm.

If you have a horn button on the end of the stalk, then the hole also has the earth wire inside, so if you have this type of arm, do not be tempted to pull it out before pushing it back in.

QUESTION: Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
Ok, the floppyness is more in the slider back and forth that make the high beam flash.
Not so much the arm itself.
Is there a way of tightening that?
Is it maybe the spring?
Thanks in advance for any insights.

Answer
Hi Albertine.  The dip/flash mechanism is held into the body of the switch by a roll pin that acts as a pivot.  There are two bits of black plastic that bend and act as springs.  My guess is that one of these plastic springs has snapped or melted.  This sometimes happens when the electrical contacts overheat.

These units were not designed to be repaired, so my advice is to fit a new unit. The Moss part number is 141-855 and the price of a complete new switch with wiring is $64.95
