MG Car Repair: MGB Shift Linkage, shift linkage, mechanic friend

Question
We just bought a 76 MGB. First off, (no offense to all the women out there), but I am a woman and I know NOTHING about cars or their engines.  Our mechanic friend said we need to replace the shift linkage ???? (it's kind of hard to shift). Is "shift linkage" actually a part(s) you buy, and if so where? (Is this actually the name?  I've looked on MG parts sites and I don't see this.)  Don't mean for this to be a stupid question, but it is what it is.

Answer
Hi Leslie,

Shift linkage is not just one component, but is a series of pieces and it is unlikely that all of them need to be replaced.

Maybe I can put more light on what is wrong if you will give me some details on what is wrong. For example you say it is hard to shift. You need to clarify that for me.

It is hard to move the shift lever?
It makes a grinding noise when trying to shift?
It makes a grinding noise when shifting from neutral to reverse?
The shift lever is loose and has a lot of free play in it?

Be very specific as to what you have wrong driving the car.
