MG Car Repair: gears grinding on my mg midget, clutch master cylinder, clutch disk

Question
hello, i have a 1977 mg midget, the problem I'm having is it grinds alot when i shift it into about every gear. i have a new clutch master cylinder.i have bled the system and also had a mechanic bleed the system also. the clutch seems to be great, it starts to take when i lift the peddle about an inch off the floor. i also have the problem of when i come to a stop sign and i have a few cars in front of me and i creep forward as i approach the stop sign, then i push the peddle to the floor as to come to a stop, it seems to jump and buck a little like the clutch isn't disengaging.thats about the best way i can explain it, could it be the slave cylinder not pushing out enough? the slave cylinder i did not replace. I've read all kinds of different answers to the problem of grinding gears, so I'm not sure which way i should go, a little advise would be helpful.

Answer
Hi Gary,

A rough way to test the clutch hydraulic system is to push the clutch pedal down with your hand. It should move freely about an inch then it should get hard to push and as you push it down to the floor it should feel just as hard all the way down. If it is easy at first and progressively harder as you go to the floor, there is most likely still air in the system.

If it is as I stated above and the clutch don't release fully, it is inside and either a clutch disk or pressure plate problem.

While it is true that when you replace or rebuild a master cylinder, you should rebuild or replace the slave cylinder.
