MG Car Repair: 1976 midget will not start, starter fluid, cause fire

Question
Hello, I have 1976 Midget that will turn over, but will not start. It was running recently and then set for about 2 months.  Now it will not start.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Answer
Hi Steve,

When someone brings me a car that will not start I have to first check the compression to see that this engine can run. It must have from 125 PSI to about 170 PSI on all four cylinders with very little difference between cylinders.

If it don't pass this test, it is a waste of time looking at fire or fuel as the cause.

Fire at the plugs can be tested with a timing light.

Fuel can be tested by spraying starter fluid into the intake when try to start the engine.
