MG Car Repair: 1974 MGB speedo and screenwash, windshield washer, trip recorder

Question
Actually two questions:1. speedometer stopped working;found 2 cables under the dash; both appear intact with the metal tipped going to the transmission and the plastic tipped going to the gauge.  Where do they connect under the dash. 2. driver side windshield washer jet does not work.  Used a syringe with both air and water with some leakage into the driver's side. How do you disconnect the jet and replace the tubing. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Jack.
I hope you have small nimble fingers.  These jobs are best done lying on your back with your feet in the air and your head in the driver's footwell.  You will also need a torch (flashlight).

The long thick metal cable is the speedo drive.  It has a threaded collar that must be screwed into the middle of the rear of the speedometer.  The smaller, thinner cable is the trip recorder reset.  It goes into a non-circular hole in the back of the speedo, after which you just give it a quarter turn.  If you turn too far it falls out of the hole, so try again.

The screenwash tubing should also be visible under the dashboard.  There is a supply tube from the washer pump.  It goes to a plastic T-piece, where it divides into two.  My guess is the T-piece has come apart or broken.  The old plastic tubing is very difficult to pull off once it has hardened.  I cut along the tube with a surgeon's scalpel to remove it.  You will need to purchase some fresh tubing before you start.
