MG Car Repair: MG oil pump stud stuck in block, adjustable spanner, locking nuts

Question
'74 MGB - I have removed two of the three studs from the block but the 3rd one was stuck. I tried locking nuts and then filing some flats and using a large adjustable spanner. Unfortunately the stud sheared off and is now stuck in the block, practically flush with the block. Any recommendations?!
Many thanks.

Answer
Hi Richard,

Sorry to hear it is broke off flush. Not much you can do now except drill it out. Not an easy job because it needs to be drilled very straight. If you have an old pump you can use it as a drill guide. First grind or file the end flat then put the old pump on and bolt it down with the two good holes and then use a transfer punch to center punch the end of the stud. Then drill it out. Be careful not to break a drill bit when drilling.

If there is a little left that might be grabbed with vice grips, hammer on the end to see if you can loosen the threads first. If that don't work do the above.
