MG Car Repair: carb, electric fuel pumps, uk sports car

Question
Hi Barrie, thanks for your quick response on my question about my weber carb. You ask if it was a downdraft and it is. I took it off and found 38dgev on the baseplate. This carb floods out so bad gas is getting into the oil. You said to put su's back on, so what su's are original to this car, 69 mgb. Besides the 2 carbs, air filters, and intake, anything else needed for this project besides many dollars.

Answer
Hi Mike.  You need everything.

I would buy a new pair of carbs from Burlen Fuel Systems of Salisbury, UK.  The original carbs were SU HS4 units fitted with FX needles.  They also sell SU electric fuel pumps.

I would then buy everything else from a specialist UK sports car breaker, such as Andy Jennings.  You will need the intake manifold, all the carb linkages, plastic spacer blocks between carb and manifold, and the heat shield (essential with modern fuel).  You will also need to link up the emission breather pipes that join the carbs to the front tappet chest.  Andy Jennings should be able to supply these bits as well, along with air filter casings (but see below).

Control cables for the choke and accelerator should be bought new from Moss Motors.  Moss can also supply a pair of paper air filter elements (or you could replace them with a shiny new K&N filter kit which they also market).

Finally, you will need a cheap disposable inline fuel filter and a length of fuel hose (8mm internal diameter).
