MG Car Repair: carb and ignition, facet fuel pump, spark plug wires

Question
Hi Barrie, I have a 69mgb don't know if its uk or us but could you recommend what weber carb and fuel pump would work on this car. Right now it has a weber with no i.d. tag. The carb is garbage. Same thing with the fuel pump, its all plastic and cracked, also no name or numbers on it. One more thing about the points distributor, also junk. I would like to change out to a pertronix electronic flame thrower. Your advise would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Mike.  Both sidedraught 40DCOE and downdraught 28/36 DCD Weber carbs were available for the MGB.

If you have a downdraught (air intakes on top) then sell them on eBay along with the manifold.  They were a poor replacement for twin SUs.  I would fit the original twin SUs along with the original manifold and I would fit the original SU fuel pump.

If you have a sidedraught (intakes at the side) then it will be a 40DCOE, which works well and delivers good power, but it is thirsty.  You could fit a new 40DCOE to your existing manifold.  Replace the fuel pump with a road-specification Facet fuel pump, and fit a Filter King pressure limiting device into the fuel line.

If the distributor is badly worn, then fitting a Pertronix Igniter will not fix the wear.  Better to fit a new distributor.  If you can afford it, a 1-2-3 distributor would be a good choice, or else fit a new distributor from Moss Motors and fit a Pertronix Igniter to replace the points.

The Pertronix Flame Thrower coil is very good, but a Lucas Sports coil is half the price.  If you have the original spark plug wires, replace them with some good quality ones such as Magnecor.
