MG Car Repair: 1978 mg, terminology problem, stop pin

Question
QUESTION: im taking apart my master cylinder to rebuild it ive already got the two clips off that are on the shaft it looks now like a washer holding it in could it be stuck or rusted? i need to know exactly how to get that shaft out so i can rebuild it ok?

ANSWER: Hi William,
I don't know what two clips you are talking about because there are no clips on the shaft. There is only one clip and it is in the bore of the cylinder holding the Piston and seals in the bore.

Answer
William, There would have to be groves in the shaft for any clip to fit into and there are no MGs that have any clips on their shaft. All MGs have clips in groves in the bore of the cylinder. The one that you should have on your car should have a clip in the bore that holds a thin steel washer up against a white plastic spacer and further in another clip in the bore that holds the first piston in. Other models had a clip IN THE BORE that held the first piston in and a spring was between the first and second piston and the forward piston was held in by a "Stop pin" which is under the reservoir.

If you have a digital camera, take a picture of your cylinder and the parts that you have already removed so I can ID it. Try to take a close up of the shaft that has the groves in it that your clips were on. I have worked in MG dealerships since 1960 and I have never seen a clip in a grove on a shaft. There is a link in this program to send a picture.

If this is a terminology problem and you do have the model that has a white plastic spacer that was held in with a thin steel washer and a clip (which was in a grove in the bore NOT the shaft) tell me and I can tell you how to remove the white plastic spacer.
