MG Car Repair: clutch slave cylinder, clutch slave cylinder, clutch master cylinder

Question
Thanks for you help so far.. the 1973 midget is my brothers car and I am helping him on it,,, we did get the new slave on and I did it the way you say, worked great and had a clutch in no time, but we still have the same problem as before... we can't hardly get the car even to start when the car is in gear, it' like the clutch is not fully ingaged, you can start in in first gear and it will start going forward with the clutch all the was pushed in, in any gear it that way, and then if you start it out of gear it really grinds hard to even get in gear,,, we have tried everything, put the new slave cylinder on , and new clutch master cylinder , and the clutch itself is only 2 years old,,,,,,,,,, it's just like the clutch is not fully depressed or engadgeing or disengadgeing, we are at a lose,,,, could it be the clutch itself ? is there anyway to adjust it ? would it help to make the push rod longer or shorter ??We also checked the transfer
case and fluid levels are right
Thanks for your help

Answer
Hi Steve.  Either you still have a bubble of air in the system, or the carbon thrust bearing is badly worn or too short, or there is some wear in the mechanism.

If your clutch line has any downward dip in it, there might still be a bubble of air in the middle of the metal pipe.  Try to bend it continuously upward.

I have seen thrust bearings of different length, so someone may have sold you the wrong one.  In extreme cases I have removed the pushrod from the slave cylinder, run a die over the end to thread it, and put a dome nut on the end.

What state are the two clevis pins in?  If there is excessive wear in a clevis pin or the eye that it fits into, this can produce lost motion.

Check for sideways movement of the pedal, indicating excess wear of the bush inside the pedal.

Finally, check that you have a return spring on the clutch pedal.  If it is missing, the pedal will not return fully.  It should be at the top of the pedal inside the car above your toe.  Look at the brake pedal, that should have one as well.

Let me know how you get on
