MG Car Repair: MGB 77 just flatens out????, electric fuel pump, oil gauge

Question
I am driving along a flat road in 3rd gear and it just flattens out on power, I put the gas down, no additional power, just continues to flatten out or no power, I shift to 2nd, power for a few minutes, then same symptom, no power, go to first gear, fine for a few minutes, then power loss on aceleration, then pull over. Shut her off. Wait a few minutes, starts fine, powers up to 3rd again fine, then all of sudden no power. She is not sputtering or jerking, just sudden loss of power. Oil gauge reads just below 50, has gas, has all fluids.

Any answers or ways to trouble shoot? When she looses power, you must pull over, there is absolutely no way to keep going.

Answer
Hi Sage.  You have described the classic symptoms of an electric fuel pump that is getting tired.  It has enough power to get you started, but it is unable to supply sufficient fuel to keep you going at speed.

First off, you could try cleaning the points inside the lid of the pump.  If they are badly burnt, you need to fit replacement points or a replacement pump.  Access to the pump is behind a large black metal shield inside the boot (trunk) behind the spare wheel.
