MG Car Repair: slave cylinder, auto parts stores, bleeder valve

Question
Having removed the slave cylinder from my 1979 MGb and cleaning out 30 years of junk my question is.  How do I know the master cylinder is working.  If I push down on the clutch should fluid come out od the slave cylinder line?  I ordered a new slave cylinder.

Answer
Hi Norman,
If you want to test a master cylinder just remove the line from the master cylinder and put a dead plug in it's place. Most auto parts stores have an assortment of brake bleeder valves that should have a bleeder valve that will have the same threads as the clutch line. Pump the pedal and hold down on the pedal and bleed the air out at the bleeder valve and you should have a solid hard pedal. Then hold a light pressure on the pedal for a couple of minutes. If the pedal stays up it is ok but if the pedal slowly goes down you have a bad cylinder and must either rebuild it of replace it.
