MG Car Repair: MGB71 Fuel pump, mg car club, positive earth

Question
My MGB from 1971 needs a new fuel pump. I have looked for a spare part but there are several different pumps for sale. Ones with negative or positive earth. How do I know what pump I actually need for my MGB? Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer
The MGB went from positive earth to negative earth around 1965.  Your car is a 71, so it is negative earth.  If you have any doubts, check which way the batteries are connected.

The correct pump for your car is an AUF305 (Moss part #AZX1307).

Pumps are expensive (about £100) and you may not need a new one.  Mostly, the points burn out.  If you replace the points (cost about £12), then your old pump should be good for another 10 years.  Make sure you buy twin points (AUB6106A), they last longer.
