MG Car Repair: problem in 3rd gear, high tension wire, nissan sentra

Question
my nissan sentra 98 ex saloon ( MT ) has a problem accelerating in 3rd gear.  No problem in 1st and 2nd, lots of power.  In 3rd  gear the car will seem to starve out under hard acceleration.  If you let up off of the accelerator, the engine will seem to "catch up" and the car will then accelerate, but slowly. The timing, high tension wire, clutch, fuel filter and sparkplugs had checked and still the same result...what could be the problem?tnx

Answer
Hi Jon.  I do not know anything about the Nissan Sentra.  However, from my knowledge of cars in general, I would suspect that you are correct - the car is being starved of fuel under hard acceleration.

My first reaction is a blocked fuel filter, but that has been changed.  Is there another filter somewhere in the system that is partially blocked?  I don't know Nissans well enough to answer that question.

The car is 12 years old.  I would get a garage to do a flow test on the fuel pump, because it could be starting to fail.  It is still capable of providing adequate fuel for cruising, but may be unable to satisfy the additional demand of hard, prolonged acceleration.

I hope this helps.
