MG Car Repair: 1976 mgb roadster voltage stabiliser, fuel gauge, temperature gauge

Question
Where is the stabiliser located?  How big of a job is it to change it?  Any special tools needed?  Have a manual, but does not list its location or tools needed.  Will a bad one make the tach go crazy if it is bad?  Any added advice toward installation.

Answer
Hi Rebecca.  Sorry for the delay - I had a major computer failure for 10 days.

The voltage stabiliser on an MGB is located on the bulkhead in front of the driver (or passenger).  Sit in the seat and look high up in front of you, underneath the dashboard.  You should see a small oblong canister held by a single screw.  It has two wires going to it, one dark green, the other light green with a dark green stripe.

I very much doubt that it is faulty.  The voltage stabiliser only powers the fuel gauge and the temperature gauge.  It does NOT power the tacho.

If the tacho is going crazy, I would guess that you have fitted some sort of electronic ignition equipment that is producing multiple sparks.
