MG Car Repair: Cooling fan modification, federal spec, electric fan

Question
I have a '76 B in Denver, and the cooling system keeps up quite adequately in the summer here.  In the winter, the engine never reaches normal operating temperature.  I am planning to remove the water pump fan and install an electric fan with a probe thermostat.  Are there any potential problems I should be aware of, such as added vibration in the water pump, etc?  Or should I just look forward to the power savings?  Also, I am planning on installing a pusher fan, but are there any benefits to using a puller fan instead, if removing the existing fan makes enough space?

Answer
Hi Billy.  From 77 the B had an electric fan as standard - you just missed out.  Yes, install an aftermarket kit and ditch the mechanical fan.  Just use shorter bolts.  Pullers and pushers both work fine.  Power savings will be mimimal, but on a Federal Spec. B every BHP makes a difference.

I am concerned that you never get up to temperature in winter.  I think you may have 2 problems:

1) A faulty thermostat.
2) Too much cooling of the oil.

I would replace the thermostat just to be sure, and I would make up a cover for the oil cooler (which you should remember to remove every summer).
