MG Car Repair: 1954 MG TF master brake cylinder, master brake cylinder, moss motors

Question
Mr. Jones,

I need instructions on removing the master brake cylinder on my 1954 MG TF. I purchased a kit to repair it from Moss Motors but I can barely reach the cylinder.
Also, could you give me detailed instructions for bleeding the brakes. It would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Lynden Foley

Answer
Hi Lynden.
The TF master cylinder is held to the chassis by two large bolts.
Before you remove them, first you must remove the brake pipe on the end.

The thread is 3/8 BSF, so try not to damage it and please use the correct spanner (wrench).
Once you remove the pipe it will dribble hydraulic fluid all over the floor, so be ready for it.
The end of the master cylinder inside the pedal box has an actuating rod.  This will stay behind when you remove the cylinder.

Re-assembly is straightforward.  Bleeding should be done starting with the brake cylinder nearest to the master cylinder, then do the other 3 ending with the furthest one.  Do no allow the master cylinder to become empty.  Keep it topped up, or else you will have to bleed the system all over again.

You can use any brake fluid, so long as it is to DOT3 or DOT4 specification.
