MG Car Repair: Hydraulic Clutch, haynes manuals, hydraulic clutch

Question
I have a 1979 MGB that we replaced Slave, Master cylinder and Hose.  Is Dot 3 brake fluid okay to use?  Thank you very much for all of your post they have been very helpful.

Answer
Hi Vicki,
The aftermarket books say you can, but I worked for several dealerships for many years and I was told and seen bad effects from using DOT 3. We always used DOT 4. For no other reason you should use DOT 4 because it can handle higher temperatures than DOT 3 can. There is no question about that. I contacted Haynes manuals when a reader found that Haynes claimed you could use DOT 3 in an MG. Haynes said that they could not give me an answer why they stated that you could use DOT 3.

My advice is to only use DOT 4 fluid in the brakes and in the clutch.
