MG Car Repair: 1973 MG MIdget, delco alternator, auto electrician

Question
I have a problem with my alternator. Had it rebuilt by a well known shop twice. Im still having problems with it charging my battery which is brand new. (sears gold diehard) I have a modern radio called retro sound from Moss motors. That is the only thing that was added last year and the car ran fine. I have read that going to an american made Delco alternator was a better choice for more charging power. Is this something I should consider or just replace with a moss motor model?

Answer
I recommend that you get an auto electrician to check out the electrics first.  You may have a problem.  I recently had to replace a battery twice, because the brand new replacement had a faulty cell.

The alternator on a 73 Midget is not particularly powerful.  It is rated at about 35 Amps.  This is adequate so long as you don't have any accessories that use LOTS of power.  The Moss Retro Sound system is rated at 4 x 60 Watts.  That adds up to 240 Watts, which needs 20 Amps to run at full power.  Therefore, you may need to upgrade to a more powerful alternator.  Look for one that is rated at 55 Amps or more.
