MG Car Repair: location of 1979 mgb fuse box, fuse box, high beam

Question
went to sleep last night...all lights working...got up this morning...now no lights working. Help...I only see 4 fuses under the bonnet, and they are all good.

Answer
Hi Joseph.  I assume that you have checked and only the lights are not working.  I would start the car and check that the wipers and horn still work.  If not, you may have an earthing problem.

To answer your question.  The sidelights are supplied by the top 2 fuses.  The headlights have NO FUSES.  The high beam flasher is on a different circuit and may still work.  Try it.

If the headlamp flasher still works but the lights do not, then my guess is the light switch has failed, or the wiring attached to the switch.  If the high beam flasher on the steering column stalk still works, that would confirm my guess.

I suspect that, when you extract the light switch from the cowl, the connector on the brown wire will be melted.  Careful, the brown wire is ALWAYS live, so I advise you to disconnect the battery before going any further.  If the plastic cover on the connector has melted, then it would be best to cut the old connector off and crimp a new connector to the wire.

If all looks ok, try shorting the brown wire to the red wire and see if all the sidelights come on.  If they do, then the switch has failed internally.  If not, get back to me.
