MG Car Repair: Ignition Switch, steering column lock, grub screw

Question
MG 1979 Mark 4 1500 - my ignition switch came apart and is in pieces.  Can I merely replace the switch or do I need to replace the whole unit above the steering column?

Answer
Hi John.  The ignition switch is a small round unit that fits into the back of the steering column lock.  It is usually held in with a small grub screw.  They are available separately, part number BHA5292.  You do not need to remove the lock in order to replace the switch, although it is a bit fiddly.
