MG Car Repair: 1968 MGB (GHN4) seat belts, shoulder belts, lap belts

Question
Hi Howard,

thank you for your previous answers to my questions; you display rare patience with me...

My car (as above) has a black interior with red piping.  It has a single set of tan colored seat belts for the passenger, and none for the driver.  Are these seat belts stock, or did a previous owner install them?  My understanding of this car is that it was originally purchased and driven in California.  What were the seat belt rules in 1968?

Again, thank you in advance for any and all information you can provide.

Regards,
Dan

Answer
Hi Dan,
All MGBs came with belts but I don't have anything in writing that tells if the 68 had just a lap belt or a shoulder belt. I had a new 66 B and it came with a lap belt and I soon installed a shoulder belt so as I remember the 67 on had shoulder belts. Look on the edge of the body just inside of where the top mounts to see if there is a threaded hole behind each seat on the roadster. On the GT it was on the rear wheel hump. This will tell you if it had just lap belts or shoulder belts. I do remember some being gray but never tan in color and most were black.
Check with Moss Motors as they usually have good dated info on what year car had what.
