MG Car Repair: 1954 MG TF Brake Mastercylinde Removal., hydraulic pipe, clevis pin

Question
Barry.  Can the master cylinder be removed from the underside (with or without modification). With regards Tony S.

Answer
Hi Anthony.  The short answer is yes.  No modifications required.

1) Put a tray underneath to catch the spillage of brake fluid.

2) Undo the hydraulic pipe from the back of the master cylinder.  The pipe is weak, so do not twist the pipe.  If you need to get a new pipe made up, remember that the ends are threaded 3/8 BSF (not UNF).

3) Undo the two nuts and remove the through bolts holding the m/c to the chassis.

4) Pull the entire m/c out towards the rear of the car, leaving the pushrod still attached to the bottom of the brake pedal.

Check the clevis pin on the bottom of the pedal.  They get no lubrication and they do wear.  I have seen one almost cut in half and just waiting to shear.

Note that there is an access panel on the inside face of the pedal box.
