MG Car Repair: 1959 MGA Roadster transmission problem, british car club, shift lever

Question
QUESTION: Hi, i have inherited a beautiful 1959 MGA Roadster from my uncle. he had payed for all fluids to be replaced before giving it to me. i drove it twice that weekend and then it sat for about a week. on my next attempt to take it out for a spin i notice that the transmission is stuck in neutral and the transmission is completely locked up. is there anything i can try at home before i have it towed to a shop?

thanks, Remington

ANSWER: Hi Remington,
Before we can make that determination you need to clarify that for me.
Do you mean that the shift lever will not go into any of the "H" pattern gears? Do you mean with the engine running or not running? Does the shift lever move right to left? Or do you mean it grinds when you try to put it in any gear with the engine running?

QUESTION: Hi,
The shift lever does not seem to be in any of the "H" pattern gears and i cannot move it at all. The engine runs great but i have to hold the clutch in. I did find out that the shop it had been taken to did not replace the transmission fluids, and my uncle had driven it on no transmission fluid for about 75 miles before he had given it to me.

Thanks,
Remington

Answer
Hmmmm! that's bad news. You need to fine an experienced MG mechanic and have him check it out as the transmission could have been destroyed by your Uncle, as most transmissions will not go 75 miles with no oil. There are transmissions still around in parts cars. You need to locate the local British car club to try to search for one if it is locked up.
