MG Car Repair: cluch, hydraulic clutch, clutch release


Question
I,ve replace the master and slave cylinders, it still want to pull off in  first  gear  gears are  some what hard to get. can you  please me.

Hi Mel.  I presume you have an MGB or Midget with hydraulic clutch release mechanism.  I would guess there is a bubble of air stuck in the slave cylinder.  Undo the two bolts holding the slave cylinder to the bellhousing and allow it to hang down on the flexible hose.  Remove the rubber boot and press the piston with your finger as far into the cylinder as it will go.  That should force the air bubble up into the pipe and it will then rise into the master cylinder and dissipate into the air.  You may need to operate the clutch pedal (ONCE ONLY) and then press the piston a second time.  Put it back together again and all should be well.  Remember to check the fluid level when you have finished.
