MG Car Repair: Midget headlight/heater switches, beam lights, test light

Question
Sir, I have a 73 midget which I took out of a 3 yr. storage lately. At first everything worked just fine. Soon after the windshield wipers quit. Then the heater switch stopped working. After that the headlight switch also stopped working. I know the headlights work because I can pull on the high beam lever and get high beam lights. I have checked all of the fuses and they appear to be fine. All other lights work. I don't know what else to check. Any ideas?? I thought all of the switches are junk but at the same time? Thanks ahead of time for any suggestions you might have. Jim

Answer
Hi Jim,
When I worked at the dealerships I found that when I had a car with several electrical problems, I had to just pick one of the faults and take a wiring diagram and a test light and start tracing with the test light. Some mechanics start at the source (Power supply) and test toward the load (whatever don't work) I like to start at the load (whatever don't work) and turn it on and start testing with a test light there first and follow the diagram and test at each connection on toward the power supply.
It is no use at all trying to figure out what it might be from symptoms of several items not working. Some times you might get lucky by looking at a diagram and finding a common item that can cut all the faulty items out but my method is 100 sure fix with no guessing. Many times when you find the fix of one problem it also fixes the others but do all your testing on ONE circuit at a time.

If you don't have a diagram let me know and I will put one up on my web site for you to copy.
