MG Car Repair: vacum line from dist. where to put it after new webber install, vacuum leak, manifold vacuum

Question
78 mgb..trying to restore this thing.lol..anyhow i replaced carb with a webber side mount and it has no vacum hookups.
the vacum line comming from the distributor was hooked up to the egr valve. is that the right place for it? the engine will not idle below 1100 rpm with new carb. no leaks around intake either,so its not suckin air anywhere. so i figure it has to be the vacum advance line and where does it really hookup at? thanks for any info.

Answer
HI Steve,
Vacuum advance distributors connect to "Ported Vacuum" (Vacuum on a carburetor that only has vacuum when the throttle is just off idle)

Vacuum retard distributors connect to straight manifold vacuum.

As for the high idle, no engine can idle at 1100 RPM without a lot of air. So either the throttle is held open or you have a vacuum leak somewhere. The standard test for a vacuum leak is to remove the air filter and with it idling fast slowly start restricting that air available to the carburetor. As you slowly restrict the air intake if the RPM raises you for sure have a vacuum leak. If you only get a slow down of RPM then the problem is in the carburetor throttle plate/s.
