MG Car Repair: Carburetor., time believer, triumph spitfire

Question
1979 MG midget:Original carburetor on 1500 engine.Single SU.
Want to replace with either a pair of twin-SU carbs or a
32/36 Weber kit.
Could you please advise which would be the best way to go ?
Thank you.

Answer
The single SU was only available in America, presumably this included Canada.  Along with all the emissions stuff, it reduced the power considerably.

I am a long-time believer in twin SUs.  They work well, and they are economical on fuel.  I would get the entire twin SU setup from a scrapped 1500 Midget (or the Triumph Spitfire, same engine).  Doing it this way, everything under the bonnet will look genuine and original.

In the UK, there is a specialist MG breaker called Andy Jennings.  He can supply the carbs & linkages, air filters and inlet manifold.  You should also change the distributor, because the advance curve will be different.
