MG Car Repair: 1978MGB fuel tank, propane torch, charcoal canister

Question
QUESTION: hi Howard,
i purchased a new gas tank. the old gas tank has a little elbow type (vent?) by the fill pipe at the base.  it is capped.  is this a vent and should there be a hose on it or shall i just leave it capped with the rubber cap that is on it?  also, at the back of the trunk, up on the ledge above the fuel pump area, there is another capped thing with threading on it, what is this? should I do anything about it? what is it's purpose?  also, should i replace the washers on the banjo bolts for my new su fuel pump, or just clean them?  they aren't bent, just dirty.
thank you Howard...you guys are great!

ANSWER: Hi Kay,
The newer MGs had a vent pipe because they no longer had vented caps. Your car should have a vent pipe that leads up to the charcoal canister under the hood. You need either a vent hose or a vented cap.

Other fittings should be your fuel line connection.

If you have copper washers you can heat them with a Propane torch until they are just red and drop them into cold water and they will be good to use. If you have the fiber washers you just need to inspect them closely for cracks and clean them.

QUESTION: hi Howard,  thank you for responding so quick!  I need to get a vented gas cap because whomever owned the 78mgb, removed all the emissions stuff.  the engine has 1800cc on it, red, weber carb, manifold etc.  mgb info plate says MGB Tourer, manufactured in uk oct.1977 but i'm sure was sold in usa as a 78.  has spoke wheels and appears to have overdrive. i have not driven it yet as the clutch has a problem from sitting for 8 years.  have changed fluids.  what is the oil weight for the trani?  do you know anything about this car being a "Tourer"? is this a limited edition?  i owned two mgb before, a 71 and a 75 (roadsters) LOVED THEM BOTH!!!!MISS THEM so i am thrilled to get this gal back in good order. p s, the engine sounds good. 75lbs. oil pressure cold, that's good right?
thank you again.   kay

Answer
You will need to get an older style tank filler neck to get the vented cap to fit.
If it has overdrive then it is the most desired car because you can expect to drive it on expressways. The non OD cars had to turn the engine too high to keep up with expressway traffic.

Even though a "B" can run over 100 MPH without OD it required a very high RPM to cruise at 70 MPH+

75 PSI on warm oil is good. BLM told us at the dealership to stop using engine oil in our gearboxes and to run gear oil and within a week we were covered up with complaints about gear clash. The thicker gear oil was trapped in the syncros and prevented them from working correctly so we ignored BLM and went back to engine oil. (we learned to ignore most of what BLM said)

I drove my 66 "B" for 189,000 miles using engine oil in the gearbox (no syncro 1st gear) and it was still good when I replaced it with an OD box and I sold the old box to a local transmission shop and they went into it and didn't need to replace anything.

You need to read my tech tip on how to make a standard transmission last. http://mg-tri-jag.net/tech4.htm
