MG Car Repair: MGTF Alternator, alternator test, brown gammons

mgtf 2002 . fitted new battery yet after driving half mile battery light flickers on and off.  results in drained battery  presume this is alternater, have tested battery!  How does one fit a new alternater etc what are the specs etc. Please help. Thanks Dave.

Because of the design of the system, a faulty battery can damage a good alternator, so it could well be that the battery was the original problem, but you now need a new alternator as well.

However, the MGTF alternator is expensive, and it is in an awkward location, so before you replace it you must be certain that the alternator is faulty.  

I recommend that you invest in a simple alternator test device.  It attaches directly to the battery terminals and has 5 LED lights.  You connect it and check the display.  Then you turn on the head lamps, start the engine, and check the display again.  It costs £8.95 from Screwfix (part number 14456-97).  I think similar units are available from Halfords.

The correct replacement alternators are availablle from Moss, or from Brown & Gammons.  Moss will also supply a free catalogue for the MGF/TF range.  The diagrams are very helpful.
