MG Car Repair: 1968 mgb, oil sending unit, usa car

Question
I have a 68 mgb with a 77 engine.  If I replace the temp
sending unit for which year should I get?  Same with the
oil sending unit.{Both are screwed into the block}
Thanks,

Larry

Answer
Hi Larry
I assume that you are in the USA?  The sender units on a 68 UK car are mechanical devices, whereas on a 68 USA car they are electrical.

The threads on a 77 engine block should be the same as on a 68 engine, so your old 68 oil sender should fit the new engine.  If the threads are different, get back to me.

I think the thread in the cylinder head may be different on a 77 engine.  I believe that you need to fit the 77 temp sender, and it should work with your 68 gauge.  If the gauge shows a strange reading, get back to me.

1968 was a changeover year.  Early 68 cars had 12 volt gauges and later 68 cars had 10 volt gauges.  So long as you haven't changed the gauges, there shouldn't be a problem.
