MG Car Repair: 79 MGB fuel pump/electrical problems, fuse box, running light

Question
I recently purchased a new SU fuel pump to replace the original that died. After installing the pump, and connecting all the electrical connections, I tried starting it up. There were no characteristic clicks from the fuel pump, so I examined the wiring. With the ignition on, the lead connecting to the trunk side of the fuel pump will spark when it is grounded to the body. It would not spark, however, when touched to the connection on the fuel pump itself.

Also, after turning off the ignition, the running lights remained lit. I tried removing the ignition and headlight switch to turn off the lights, with no success. The only solution that worked was removing either the 1st or 2nd fuse in the fuse box, after which the lights would turn off.

I'm not sure what the problem could be other than a short or loose connection of some kind, and I have no idea where to start.

Answer
Hi Alex,
Sometimes the SU pumps stick and you need to connect up a ground to the case and the hot wire and if it don't start clicking hit the metal part of the case with either a block of wood or a plastic mallet several times to see if it is just a stuck set of contacts. If that don't work you need to contact the company you purchased it from to see what they want to do.

As for the running lights staying on you need to look at your wiring diagram and then start tracing the running light circuit with a test light to see where it is receiving power with the lights turned off.

If you don't have a diagram you can go to my web site and copy one.
