MG Car Repair: engine not turning, mg midget, throttle cable

Question
hi howard
i am restoring a 1975 mg midget. i fixed the ignition so that the engine would turn over with the key. now that the engine was turning the next step was to time the engine. me and my friend time the engine, and since the fuel tank isnt installed, we sprayed gasoline into the carberretor via the air filter. after that i used the key to turn the engine over and it wouldnt start, while i was turnin the engine over my pal pulled on the throttle cable to let air in the carberettor. as soon as he did that the car just stop turning over. i charged the battery and the engine still wont turn over. im stumped. any ideas?

Answer
You need to confirm that the engine is not locked up by turning it over manually. If it turns over by hand and when you try to start it you get a kick back at the starter then you don't have it timed correctly or you have the plug wires crossed.
