MG Car Repair: mgb transmission, starter solenoid, bendex

Question
QUESTION: what changes do i have to make to install 1980 mgb  trans. into 1967 mgb

ANSWER: Hi Ray,
I put a late model trans in a 66 once (same as a 67) and I would never try another as I had to cut part of the bell housing off and use a hole saw to make the starter bendix fit and I had to cut part of the tunnel out and add sheet metal. I got it in but will never do it again and don't recommend it.

QUESTION: can you tell me what car  # was the floor pan changed in 1967  my mgb 1967 #ghn3u138042g has a 4 speed and older style starter ?

Answer
Hi Ray,
All my info shows that the early style starter and body style (floor area and tunnel) were up to and including # 138400. The bell housing had a hole for the starter bendex to go through like an MGA did. The 138401-on were 1968 model cars that had a starter solenoid mounted on the starter motor and the bendex was internal and moved by the solenoid. The tunnel and transmission was fatter and thus the floor pans were different. Also I show the prefix to be GHN3"L"
