MG Car Repair: 1972 MGB, speedometer gear, speedometer cable

Question
Greetings,
I have a 1972 MGB with an overdrive transmission.  Recently the speedometer quit working.  I've replaced the speedometer cable but this did not help.  The cable does not turn when the car is moving.  Where do I go next?  If I have to go into the transmission to look at the speedometer gear, what do I look for?  what fluid do I use?
Thanks, James

Answer
Hi James,
Check the the angle drive on the overdrive to see if it is rotating. This is a common failed item. There is usually never a problem with the drive gear in the overdrive itself. It is either the driven gear (available from outside of the overdrive) or the angle drive unit. You also need to check the speedometer and cable to see what caused the breakage.
